Adam Craig to compete against Europe's best young sailors for Great Britain

Year 8 student Adam Craig was selected to race for Great Britain this year in his first international competition on Lake Garda in Italy.  Adam has been sailing casually since he was 4 years old but started racing competitively when he was 10, so for two and a half years.

Adam's mum said, "As a family, we all sail so he has been around boats since he was born. His dad sails competitively so most of our family holidays involve travelling to and spending time at sailing clubs. Our club has hosted a few Optimist Open events which Adam took part in and really enjoyed. His passion for racing has grown from there. He has taken part in numerous competitions, from Weymouth to Stonehaven in Scotland, and lots in between!

Adam sails a small boat designed for children aged 15 and under, called an Optimist. Adam was selected in September 2020 to join one of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Regional Training Groups (RTG). These are aimed at talented children in the sport and offer training opportunities over the winter months in all weather conditions, at a variety of locations with some of the UK's top coaches. He has just heard that he has again been selected for 2021-2022.

During a national competition held at Grafham Water last May, Adam was selected to represent the Optimist GBR Junior Team at an international event. Adam was delighted! There have been many delays changes to the plan as a result of Covid but we are all very excited to be supporting Adam at his first international event at Torbole Yacht Club on the shores of Lake Garda.  Currently there are 603 entrants which is by far and away the biggest event any of us have been to, with boats from all over Europe and further afield - it promises to be a very exciting opportunity for all of our young sailors."

Elowyn Meers selected for British Para Swimming Talent Squad.

Year 8 student Elowyn Meeres has been selected for the British Para-Swimming National Talent Development Programme. Elowyn will benefit from regular training camps and first-class coaching as part of the squad and she will also receive support at the upcoming National Championships in December. It will be her second appearance at the event and she has fond memories of her first, “I met Ellie Robinson and Ellie Simmonds,” she said. "It was just insane. They’re my idols. To be able to meet them, get photos and even swim with them was amazing.”

Well done Elowyn and good luck for the Nationals.

Activities Day Business and Media – Year 8

Year 8 students stayed on site on activities day but had a busy day engaging in creative group tasks and learning more about the GCSE subjects of business and media. Below is an account of the day by three Year 8 students:

The purpose of this day was to create interest and let us learn what some of the most common GCSE topics were about. This included Business and Media. During the day we worked on creating a pitch and presentation for our own custom subscription box, which included aspects of Business and Media during each of the sessions. We switched between the two subjects adding different elements to each of them until the end of the day when we decided who had created the best pitch and subscription box out of the year group. This day has taught us how to create an effective and persuasive pitch, come up with reasonable prices, target audiences and advertisements. We also showed compatible cooperation within our team and worked together so that everyone could achieve more. We all enjoyed activities day because it brought out our hidden problem- solving skills and our teamwork together.
