Teaching and Learning Principles
The Piggott School’s Teaching & Learning Vision
At The Piggott School, we believe that every learner has the potential to succeed and flourish. Our teaching is rooted in high expectations, evidence-informed practice, and a commitment to ensuring that all learners are both supported and challenged to achieve their very best. We deliver a rich and ambitious curriculum that develops deep knowledge, critical thinking, and the skills needed for lifelong success.
Guided by Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, teachers use a balance of explicit teaching, guided practice, enquiry, and problem-solving to secure understanding and mastery. Oracy is central to our approach, with structured discussion and rich vocabulary supporting thinking, communication, and learning across the curriculum. Through retrieval practice, effective questioning, and ongoing formative assessment, we identify and address misconceptions while strengthening long-term learning.
We foster inclusive, engaging, and emotionally safe classrooms where mistakes are valued as opportunities for growth and each pupil has access to meaningful challenge. Collaboration, curiosity, and joyful enquiry are encouraged to deepen learning and strengthen relationships. Our teachers continually reflect on and refine their practice, ensuring the highest quality education for every child.
