Take a moment to reflect
Published 23/03/21Today has been marked as a National Day of Reflection.
At 12pm, the school community will come together virtually for a moment of silence when we will reflect on collective loss, show support to those bereaved and hold on to hope for a brighter future ahead. We will prepare our students carefully for this moment of reflection.
Please be assured that we will be vigilant and we will respond to support any student who experiences upset during this time. We are extremely proud of the community spirit shown by our students throughout the last twelve months. Twin success in computing challenge
Published 17/03/21Over 480 Piggott students from Years 7 - 13 took part in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge last November for a chance to make it through to the Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC), a prestigious event in computational thinking.
Of that number, 50 Piggott students scored in the top 10% nationally, automatically giving them a place in Oxford University’s ‘invitation-only’ event.
The first round of the annual OUCC challenge is held online in schools, and supervised by teachers with participants' solutions auto-marked by the OUCC system.
Following this, the top 20 students in each age group are usually invited to Oxford University to compete in the final, but for obvious reasons, the final will be held remotely in 2021.
This year, Piggott twins Finlay and Oliver remarkably achieved a top 20 place after competing against 3,875 students nationwide in the Year 8 & 9 OUCC category.
This is a remarkable achievement, “We are all super excited and so proud of Oliver and Finlay”, says Patranjali Bhattacharya, the Head of Computer Science at The Piggott School.
“As a department we work hard to organise a great number of activities and competitions every year to inspire our students. This competition started in November and wrapped up over lockdown, which made things more challenging to organise and I thank Miss Leonard for all her hard work with this. When we make break-throughs like this, it is very inspiring to us and our students. It keeps us even more motivated to carry on!”
This is the Piggott’s second year competing in the OUCC and last year, finalist Matthew Sullivan won the chance to spend the day at Oxford University to participate in the finals and attend seminars.
The OUCC is an invitation event which aims to encourage students to develop their skills further and produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems.
We wish Finlay and Oliver all the best in the upcoming final tomorrow, Thursday 18th March. Follow The Piggott School on Twitter @PiggottCESchool to find out how the twins get on.

Ready for mass testing
Published 04/03/21As students and staff prepare for the much anticipated return to school throughout the week commencing 8th March, the team in charge of leading the expansion of the Covid Testing Centre has been working round the clock to build 16 testing stations and train over 50 parent volunteers.
From Monday, testing will commence and students in Years 12 and 13 will take their first on-site Lateral Flow test, followed by Years 9, 10 and 11 on Tuesday and Years 7 and 8 on Wednesday. The school will undertake approximately 4000 tests on students over the course of the next two weeks as students then return for their second and third test.
Next week will be a complex mix of online teaching, on-site teaching and on-site testing, as teachers aim to keep the standards of learning high despite the inevitable disruption.
It has been an incredible team effort to meet the DfE guidelines for the safe return to school; it has taken a whole school community taskforce to make this happen and ensure we can achieve this epic challenge swiftly, smoothly and safely.
We cannot thank our school community enough for their support and words of encouragement throughout this challenging and unprecedented time. We have tried to capture as many of these messages on our website here.
We have no doubt that Piggott students will demonstrate their resilience and courage once again, as they return to school in these unusual circumstances and take it all in their stride.
The safety and wellbeing of Piggott students and staff is our number one priority and will continue to dictate the decisions we make in relation to the transition back to school. Thank you for your patience, support and understanding.
A record of all correspondence about Covid and the return to school is available on our website here.
