Reading

Reading is very important to us at The Piggott School: Charvil Primary as the ability to read is so crucial for children to access wider learning both within and outside of the school environment. We teach pupils to read using the DFE validated Phonics scheme, Rocket Phonics. Implementation of this scheme has been supported by Phonics Consultant and author of Rocket Phonics, Abigail Steel.

In addition to the Rocket Phonics reading books, we also use Bug Club which is aligned to the Rocket Phonics reading scheme, to support reading at home. Please see our Results page, for information about how well our children do in Phonics and other areas of the curriculum.

In addition to Phonics teaching in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, we teach Guided Reading on a daily basis which extends into Key Stage 2. The 'book' below shows all the texts which pupils study in Guided Reading. We have chosen rich and challenging texts and through our Guided Reading teaching, we support pupils in widening their vocabulary as well as the reading skills of retrieval, inference, prediction, summary and sequencing. We also develop pupils' understanding of authorial intent and to be able to evoke their own personal response to these texts.

Within the book, the texts are studied by term. Poetry is included and is studied when the main driver text has been completed.
