Leadership Opportunities

All Sixth Form students at The Piggott School are role models and potential leaders.  The development of leadership skills is a real strength of our Sixth Form.  We expect all students to develop such skills during their time in the Sixth Form.

The most prominent form of leadership in the Sixth Form is the Prefect system.  Senior Prefects have a high-profile role in the life of the school, and undergo a rigorous and competitive selection process, but there are many other opportunities for personal growth, displaying initiative and taking a lead.

School Captain and Vice Captains

The roles of School Captain – one male and one female student – and Vice Captains are highly respected and very sought after:  they are vital role models for younger students and liaise with staff and visitors to the school on a daily basis.  The School Captains chair the Student Council, speak publicly to large groups of parents and students and represent the school at a number of public events.  The responsibilities and commitments of these roles are challenging and immensely rewarding.

Senior Prefects

Senior Prefects have a broad range of roles, from being attached to year groups and leading tutorial activities to contributing to the school newsletter and leading student activities.  All Senior Prefects are trained mentors and lead small groups of students as well as supporting individuals within the school community in this role. Again, the role is respected and valued within the school community:  students are making a tangible contribution to other students’ development and enabling themselves to develop skills which will be extremely useful in their futures.

Attachment to Tutor Group

In addition to the Prefect system, all year 12 students are attached to a tutor group, supporting form tutors with tasks and leading younger students in a variety of activities as well as mentoring them in considering their learning. We send year 12 students on leadership development courses and whole year group activities focused on leadership are a feature of our enrichment curriculum.

Part of a Wider School Community

For all students who wish to take on a leadership role, the opportunity is there; this is fundamental to our Sixth Form ethos of fostering and encouraging each individual to fulfil his or her potential but also to play a part in the wider school community.
